Dr. Bronner's was founded in 1948 by Dr. Emanuel Bronner (1909 - 1997), a third generation master-soapmaker from a German Jewish soapmaking family that first started manufacturing soap in 1858. Driven by the Holocaust that claimed his parents and cold war that threatened his children, Dr. Bronner urgently spread his message that we must realize our transcendent unity across religious and ethnic divides or we will perish: "We Are All One or None!".

The goal of this generation is to take the environmental & social ideals that Dr. Bronner espoused on his label and apply them to our sphere of influence, for example by going both organic and fair trade. We know and do right by the farmers and workers who produce the materials that go into our soaps.
Fair Trade Coconut Oil: Our Serendipol project in Sri Lanka has become the world's foremost source of certified organic and fair trade Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO). It not only supplies Dr. Bronner's growing demand for cosmetics grade coconut oil, which give our soaps its rich and cleansing lather, but also supplies premium quality oil for Dr. Bronner's own line of food grade VCO. We pay our family farmers and workers fair prices and wages, and supply organic compost and training to improve soil fertility. The fair trade premium funds community needs such as medical equipment for local hospital.
Dr. Bronner's magic soaps company strongly believes in ruining a business that is good for its employees, society and the planet. All profits not needed to reinvest in the company Dr. Bronner's donates to charity and worthwhile causes, at least 1/3 of after-tax profits. This is over and above funds for fair trade projects.
